Leverage Dance Seeks Dancers Ages 16-22 for Immediate Performances in its 3rd Season

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 7:30-9:30pm

Impact Dance Center (5370 Katella Avenue, Los Alamitos, CA)
RSVP to leveragedance@gmail.com

Leverage Dance is currently seeking dancers for immediate performances in its 3rd season. Under the direction of Tawny Chapman, Leverage Dance seeks to provide a professional-level experience for the maturing and art-minded pre-professional dancer. Comprised of dancers between the ages of 16 and 22 with a strong technical foundation, this group focuses on bringing the art of movement to the forefront through concert dance with a strong point of view.

Dancers attend a weekly hour-long company technique class followed by a ninety-minute repertory rehearsal (Tuition: $65/month) while maintaining concurrent enrollment in a minimum of three other technique classes at a local college, high school or at Impact Dance Center. This structure allows the dancers the flexibility to customize their training schedule to meet their individual needs and goals.

Previous season performances have included studio concerts, benefit events, Studio A Dance!'s DanceSpot, Pasadena Dance Festival, MixMatch Dance Festival and the company's very own self-produced annual repertory concert The Junction. Dancers have been afforded the opportunity to work with professional choreographers Omar Olivas (Diavolo, Backhausdance), Blythe Barton (San Diego Dance Theater, Malashock Dance), and Rachel Pace (Backhausdance) in addition to Artistic Director Tawny Chapman. Previous company members have concurrently attended Chapman University, California State University Long Beach, Orange Coast College, Cypress College, Cal Poly Pomona and Los Alamitos High School. Former members have gone on to attend SUNY Purchase and LINES Ballet/Dominican University of California, while others have achieved success in the professional world performing with Disney Cruise Lines and Disneyland Resorts.

THIS WEEKEND: Backhausdance Presents "Incandescent" at the Irvine Barclay

I have had the opportunity to perform several works in my life. However, none have compared to Jennifer Backhaus' critically acclaimed evening length work Incandescent.

Backhausdance returns to the Barclay THIS weekend, April 29th and 30th, with Incandescent, Jennifer Backhaus’ first evening-length work, which premiered in 2010 in New York City.

Based on the theme of illumination, Ms. Backhaus explores light in both a physical and spiritual sense. Incandescent evokes a sense of discovery and expression of the human experience by igniting the internal shadow and bringing it to light. The piece has dancers shifting through various configurations of hundreds of light bulbs suspended from above with creative lighting techniques that help express the spectrum of emotions they experience on their journey. The human spirit glows when it is ignited by self awareness, creativity and the connection to others.

Backhausdance, Orange County’s premier contemporary dance company, was recently hailed as “one of the seven emerging dance companies in North America” by the Joyce SoHo in New York City. The company is known for its eclectic and dynamic vocabulary and for original movement that is physically demanding and strong yet fluid.

REVIEWS

"... a fluid, unforced fusion of classical and contemporary dance."
- David St Lascaux, The Brooklyn Rail

"Partnering possibilities are fresh and imaginative ... solo opportunities allow us to "meet" the dancers one-on-one, and the whole ensemble seemed wonderfully propelled by the music... the individual characteristics of each dancer were illuminated and each one "spoke" to us in his or her own dance-voice."
- Oberon's Groove, New York City Dance Blog
